(Discovered you via a link on Duolingo discussions) Do you have the University of the Third Age in the US? Primarily for the retired, but with no age limit, they are an incredibly cheap way to learn, and in my area the language classes are taught by native speakers. Teachers are volunteers, and can vary a lot, but my experience has been extremely positive. Other students can also make suggestions about good resources. Did the author use youtube courses? They are free, too, and some are great. I haven't read the book yet, but it seems to me that the author really needs to get someone to sort out the sounds he's producing, or he'll become more and more reluctant to get stuck in.
